The Olympic Games, the world’s most important sporting competition, take place every four years. The Olympic motto is ‘citius-altius-fortius’ (faster-higher-stronger).
Ancient Olympic Games
There are many legends surrounding the origins of the Olympic Games; according to one legend the Games were founded by Heracles (= Hercules in Roman mythology). Historically the first Ancient Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC. Every fourth year, they took place in Olympia in honour of the Olympian Gods. The prizes for the champions were wreaths from a sacred olive tree that was said to have been planted by Heracles.
When the Romans conquered Greece, the Games were also introduced in the Roman Empire. In 393 AD, however, Emperor Theodosius thought that the ‘pagan cult’ could threaten the Christian religion and therefore banned the Games ending a thousand-year period of Olympic Games.
Modern Olympic Games
The French Baron Pierre de Coubertin is the initiator of the modern Olympic Games. He wanted to bring nations closer together and have them compete in sports rather than fight in wars. Thanks to the efforts of Coubertin and his supporters, the first modern Games took place in 1896 – in Athens, the actual birthplace of the Olympics.
Coubertin’s idea of bringing the nations closer together is symbolised in the Olympic flag: its rings represent the five continents of the world and the colours (blue, black, red, yellow, green, white) were chosen such that they contained the flag colours of all countries participating in the games at the time the Olympic flag was created.
Months before the Olympics actually take place, the Olympic Flame is lit in Olympia and relayed to the host city where, at the opening ceremony, the last runner lights the Olympic fire. Another highlight of the opening ceremony is the parade of the competitors.
There are Olympic Summer Games, Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games. The Winter Games take place two years after the Summer Games. The Paralympic Games are an event for athletes with physical and mental disabilities – they are held shortly after the Olympic Games, at the same venues.
At the first modern Olympic games, 245 athletes from 13 nations competed in 10 different sports. Now more than 10,000 athletes from about 200 nations compete in 28 summer sports and 7 winter sports. The sports on the Olympic programme might change, however. Over the years, the IOC has added new sports (e.g. beach volleyball, snowboarding, curling) and striked out others (e.g. golf, rugby, tug of war).
The Olympic Games did not take place in 1916 due to World War I and in 1940 and 1944 due to World War II.

THE INDEPENDENCE DAY - JULY 4

Day of Independence (4 July)
Independence Day is the most important secular holiday in the United States. It is celebrated on 4 July and marks America's independence from Britain.
As you surely know, Britain once had various colonies on the American continent. Many British people moved to those colonies, and during the first 150 years of colonisation Britain did not interfere in colonial affairs. In 1763, however, Britain suddenly changed its policy: it enforced restrictions on American trade and manufacturing and tried to levy more and more taxes on the colonists, e.g. taxes on paper, sugar and tea. A high tax on tea finally provoked protest: on 16 December, 1773, some colonists dressed as Native Americans boarded British ships and threw tea into Boston harbour; that event became known as The Boston Tea Party. Britain in return passed another law in 1774—the Five Intolerable Acts—which wasn't accepted by the colonists. So in 1775, the War of Independence began.
At the beginning of the conflict, only few wanted to be independent from Britain. Most colonists thought that the English Parliament was to blame for the high taxes, and so they asked King George III for support. Seeing, however, that the king didn't help them but instead sent an army to fight the colonists, more and more colonists eventually wanted independence from Britain.
On 2 July, 1776, Congress voted for independence. The content of the declaration was under discussion for two days before, on 4 July, the Declaration of Independence was accepted. (The original document can now be seen in the National Archives exhibition hall in Washington, D.C.)
Whilst in 1776, colonists were still fighting for their independence on 4 July, today there are celebrations everywhere throughout the country. In parades lots of people are dressed in 18th century uniforms, and in the evenings you can enjoy breathtaking fireworks

DESGASTE DO MAGISTÉRIO

Lendo o editorial de hoje, no jornal Zero Hora,com o título acima, senti necessidade de expressar minhas idéias correlatas.
É bom que seja bastante veiculada a triste realidade pela qual uma categoria tão importante para a sociedade vem passando neste país. (Preciso aqui omitir o meu julgamento a respeito da pouca exigência de alto nível de formação acadêmica para ser líder da Nação,o que invariavelmente vai determinar a valorização ou não da educação). O desgaste financeiro, psicológico, emocional,motivacional e,sob meu ponto de vista,o pior:a insegurança física.
É incontestável que a procura pela carreira do magistério vem diminuindo e que devemos concordar com uma verdade polêmica;a de que quem busca melhores resultados qualitativos está buscando outras faculdades,que não as de Educação.Por outro lado, temos hoje muito mais professores altamante graduados do que há uma década. O que, curiosamente, não está se refletindo em maior qualidade de ensino. Acho que este é um fator para ser discutido.
Tenho 27 anos de magistério(ainda, e orgulhosamente, em sala de aula), não sou adepta de laudos médicos frequentes, nem de faltar por faltar, nem de pânico de aluno, de alergia a giz ou qualquer outro subterfúgio que me proporcione receber sem trabalhar. O que verifico na realidade (não de onde trabalho, Graças a Deus) é que quanto mais graduado o professor, quanto mais títulos possui, menos ele gosta de estar na sala de aula. Então para que tanta formação, tanta graduação? É preferível gente com boa qualificação e muita vontade de enfrentar a realidade da sala de aula. É lá que está o desgaste do magistério. E agora quero explicar por que falei que para mim o maior desgaste é a insegurança física. Por mais que um professor esteja bem preparado, bem motivado, seja competente em sala de aula, o desrespeito e as agressões verbais e físicas aos quais ele fica exposto diariamente é algo absurdo. As famílias não tem mais o menor respeito pelo profissional professor. Acham-se no direito de exigir à força,explicações e atitudes que nenhum outro tipo de profissional é obrigado a fazer.As agressões sofridas por professores diariamente, se forem alvo de denúncia deixarão a sociedade estarrecida. Se fossem devidamente registrados todos os episódios em que pais e mães agridem professores em seu local de trabalho, sem a menor punição, nenhum jovem mais seguiria esta profissão, em sã consciência.
Infelizmente este desrespeito todo não é sem motivo. Há uma grande parcela de profissionais que dão o péssimo exemplo. Um deles ocorrido na escola onde trabalho deixou estarrecidas a mim e minhas colegas.Numa determinada tarde, antes de encaminhar os alunos para suas salas, todos se preparavam para entoar o hino nacional, como exige a lei, e como é praxe em nossa escola. A diretora, à frente dos alunos, aguardando silêncio, lembrando-lhes da posição de sentido, do não uso do boné, etc...lembretes de sempre para reforçar o hábito que devemos criar em nossas crianças de respeitar os símbolos nacionais.Todos os professores, alunos e funcionários da escola, em silêncio, em pé, em posição respeitosa para o exercício da cidadania. Nesta oportunidade se encontravam no local, a convite da direção, alguns alunos do Curso (Superior) de Enfermagem, acompanhados de sua professora(bem graduada,certamente).Pasmem com sua atitude. Continuaram sentadas onde estavam (no mesmo local dos alunos).Continuaram conversando durante o hino e não demonstraram o menor constrangimento com a atitude tão anti-patriota. Não tivessem frequentado escola, poderíamos ainda desculpar, talvez. Mas pessoas que frequentam uma universidade, ou pior,que lecionam em uma....? Dá pra engolir?(Iracélia Zeni)

IMPROVING OUR ENGLISH

Como já dissemos, falta de material não deve ser utilizada como desculpa para não realizarmos bons trabalhos. Prova disso são os trabalhos de Inglês realizados por uma turma de oitava série (turma 82) com a qual trabalho esta disciplina. Apesar dos poucos recursos materiais, a boa vontade imperou. Com a orientação para que apresentassem cenas do cotidiano, dialogadas em inglês e filmadas, puseram-se a trabalhar , e o resultado foi muito bom. Em pequenos grupos, os alunos escolheram um tema e partiram para a execução. Primeiro fizeram um esboço escrito do trabalho, apresentando tema, título, local de filmagem. Em seguida, elaboraram as falas. Num terceiro momento, gravaram. Tenho certeza que para eles foi um bom aprendizado, além de uma experiência lúdica e ao mesmo tempo gratificante ao verem na tela a reprodução de seu esforço. A estes alunos, (que valorizaram, o com o seu trabalho, o meu trabalho) o meu beijo carinhoso. VALEU...
